What is the Lifeline program?

Lifeline is a federal government program designed to help individuals pay for a single line, home or wireless phone service. TDS Telecom and TDS Metrocom are two of the more than 2,000 telephone companies in the U.S. eligible to provide this discount to qualified customers.

Lifeline and (now Tribal-only) Link-Up programs are available in each of the participating states we serve. TDS understands how important having reliable phone service is to you and we want to help you get connected. The Lifeline program provides credits for one basic phone line into your home monthly.

Recently, the FCC has determined eligible consumers can only receive one Lifeline-subsidized phone service per household. This means participants will need to select either a landline or wireless service to be discounted, not both. And only one account per household address will be eligible. Note: A household is defined, for purposes of the Lifeline program, as any individual or group of individuals who live together at the same address and share income and expenses. Lifeline is a non-transferable benefit.

In addition, all new subscribers must demonstrate their eligibility at sign-up and must re-certify their eligibility on an annual basis.

Call us at 1-888-CALL TDS (225-5837) to talk with a customer service representative to sign up. We will mail you a state-specific form; ask you to fill it out and mail it back to us. Each state has different forms and rules to follow, so it’s easier if you get the correct forms directly from TDS.

If you want to fill out a form and mail it now, here is a link to the State forms, please click on the appropriate state – remember each state application is different-- once you have it completed you can mail it to TDS at the address listed on the form. If you mail in the wrong state’s form you will need to start the process over, so please select your state carefully. There is not an online submission option at this time.

How do I maintain my Lifeline credits?

Lifeline requires you to re-certify your eligibility annually to continue to provide a discount to eligible low-income households.
