MADISON, Wis.TDS Telecommunications Corp. (TDS™) praises the U.S. Senate for taking swift action approving Julius Genachowski as Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Lawrence Strickling as Assistant Secretary for the Communications and Information in the Department of Commerce.

The following statement may be attributed to Drew Petersen, director of external affairs and communications for TDS Telecommunications Corp.

“We applaud the U.S. Senate for taking swift action to approve Julius Genachowski as Chairman of the FCC and Robert McDowell to his second term with the Commission.

“We’re also pleased the Senate has approved Lawrence Strickling as Assistant Secretary for the Communications and Information in the Department of Commerce and administrator of the National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA). With the Senate’s swift actions FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein is now available to begin the confirmation process that will make him head of the Rural Utility Service (RUS).

“The Senate’s actions create stabilization in the leadership of the RUS and NTIA at a time when both agencies are preparing to announce the application process for disbursement of $7.2 billion in stimulus funds to create near universal Internet access for consumers throughout the nation.

TDS believes Genachowski, McDowell, Strickling and Adelstein have the experience and expertise necessary to lead our nation through the many communications initiatives that are already taking shape. From the stimulus funds for broadband expansion to broadband mapping net neutrality, cyber security, and broadband deployment, each will play a critical role. And, every decision could have a major impact on TDS, our customers, and consumers throughout the United States.

“This should prove to be one of the most dynamic periods of time in the communications industry and TDS’ 2,700 employees stand ready to join in the efforts to make high-speed Internet services available to a greater majority of Americans."
