$1,500 scholarships awarded by State Telecommunications Foundation
High school seniors in Wisconsin have a chance to win a $1,500 scholarship from the Wisconsin State Telecommunications Foundation (WSTF). Applications, available from high school guidance counselors, must be completed by Feb. 4, 2009.
Each year, local incumbent telephone companies — including TDS Telecommunications Corp. — participate in the WSTF scholarship program. Together, they team up with high schools in their serving areas, encouraging high school seniors to apply for a scholarship.
The WSTF panel reviews each application and will select 30 finalists based on applicants’ grades, academic achievements and extra-curricular activities. Scholarships will be presented in late-May (or early June) during the high school’s graduation or awards night’s programs.
“In light of the economic challenges facing so many here in Wisconsin, TDS is proud to be part of this program, helping to make college a little more accessible and affordable,” says Drew Petersen, director of legislative and public relations for TDS. “We're proud to be members of WSTF and appreciate their efforts to support the young people in the community’s we serve."
Last year, the Foundation awarded $46,500 to 33 students statewide, including $1,500 scholarships to 28 graduating high school students and $750 scholarships to 6 first-year students attending Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College's Electronics Telecommunications Program. Since 1966, the Foundation has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to 849 students.
The Foundation is part of the Wisconsin State Telecommunications Association (WSTA), which is a trade organization representing more than 70 Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers (including TDS), Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Wireless Carriers.
