TDS employees donate 61,700 meals in lieu of holiday party

Employees of TDS Telecommunications Corp. help spread holiday cheer Dane County.

It was an easy choice for employees of TDS Telecommunications Corp. when asked to select a charity to receive funds set aside for the company’s holiday party: Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin. TDS’ donation of $8,500, plus a collection drive at all Dane County TDS offices, will generate about 61,700 meals for the nonprofit organization.

“In lieu of hosting a holiday party, our employees are choosing to have the funds donated to Second Harvest,” says Drew Petersen, director of legislative and public relations for TDS. “We couldn’t be more pleased in their selection this year. There are so many families in need, TDS is proud to be able to help.”

In addition to the donation to Second Harvest, hundreds of TDS employees are busy helping Santa prepare for the upcoming holidays, donating items that would completely fill an office cubicle. TDS employees are spreading cheer to many area non-profit organizations this year, including:

  • Porchlight — Nearly 100 employees are volunteering as “guardian angels,” helping approximately 120 families and individuals in the Madison area.  For Christmas, TDS guardian angels will be delivering gifts and the fixings for a holiday meal; for Thanksgiving, TDS guardian angels donated nearly 700 pounds of turkey and ham.
  • Toys for Tots and the TDS Giving Tree — TDS employees purchased gifts to help fulfill the wishes of area families and children in need. Gifts were donated to Toys for Tots, Domestic Abuse Intervention Services, Dane County Humane Society, and Independent Living. In total more than 6 oversized boxes (4’X4’X4’) were overflowing with items.
  • Salvation Army — Nearly 90 TDS employees and family members are ringing bells at Copps Food Center on Junction Road for the Salvation Army.
  • American Red Cross Blood Drive — TDS hosted five blood drives this year, collecting 204 blood donations with the potential to save more than 600 lives. TDS will host its first blood drive of 2009 on Jan. 5.

“TDS employees are actively volunteering right now, but our employee’s efforts are year-round,” Petersen says. “Our employees enjoy teaming up to help when and where it’s most needed. It’s part of our corporate culture and says a lot about our employees. It’s how we stay connected with our customers and communities. We also believe it helps to improve the quality of life for all who live in Dane County.”

A quick look at 2008 reveals TDS employees volunteered for projects nearly every month. Employees worked with Project Home to paint a house on Madison’s east side, joined the American Cancer Society run/walk, answered phones as part of Wisconsin Public Television’s spring auction, and delivered meals for Meals on Wheels. TDS also made financial contributions totaling more than $70,000 to area non-profit organizations, including:
• American Red Cross Relief Fund
• Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County
• Lussier Community Center
• Madison Ballet “Behind the Curtains” student performance
• Madison Children’s Museum
