TDS reacts to passage of Broadband Data Improvement Act

Rural consumers will be better positioned to receive broadband access

Tuesday evening (Sept. 30, 2008), the US Senate completed work on S. 1492, a bill to improve the quality of federal broadband data collection and encourage state initiatives that promotes broadband deployment.

The following statement can be attributed to Drew Petersen, spokesman for TDS Telecommunications Corporation:

“TDS appreciates the significant efforts put forward by Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Dan Inouye (D-AK) and his colleagues to move this important telecommunications bill another step forward in the legislative process.

“As a telecommunications company serving predominantly rural and suburban America, TDS sees S. 1492 as having areas of profound importance to our customers and our company.

“For TDS, the bill adds to the discussion on whether or not the federal Universal Service Fund should be expanded, by definition, to include broadband as a supported service.

“While nearly 90 percent of TDS customers currently enjoy access to broadband services, the remaining 10 percent of our customers who live in predominantly rural, hard to serve areas deserve access. The information that will be recovered from this legislation and the surveys it will commence should strengthen the argument with policymakers that the time has come for a widespread, US policy on access to broadband services which will likely include support from the federal Universal Service Fund.

“TDS appreciates the Senate’s efforts to move S. 1492 forward over the last 36 hours. Rural consumers deserve equal access to exciting product innovations such as video entertainment competition, ubiquitous broadband deployment, lower prices and better service. Passage of S. 1492 will accelerate this discussion.”
