Telephone and Data Systems, Inc. parent company of TDS Telecommunications Corp. and US Cellular® recently earned top rating by Audit Integrity making the list of most trustworthy companies in the U.S. Of 8,000 U.S. public companies rated by Audit Integrity, only 206 [top 3%] made the list.
Audit Integrity’s statistically based analysis is used by auditors, regulators, insurers, and investment managers to distinguish between companies that have high transparency and corporate integrity and those that publish opaque and potentially misleading or fraudulent financial information.
Forbes Magazine uses this information to create its yearly “100 Most Trustworthy Companies” list. Telephone and Data Systems, Inc., was on the 2009 list. The 2010 list has not yet been published.
The company’s site auditintegrity.com lists all 206 companies that meet certain stringent criteria, with monthly updates to ensure the list reflects their current practice.
Audit Integrity’s requirements for trustworthy corporations include corporations which have consistently shown transparent and conservative accounting practices and solid corporate governance. To qualify for the list, companies must be listed on a U.S. Stock Exchange, have market capitalization of $200 million or more, and have maintained the following for at least four consecutive quarters:
• Accounting and Governance Risk (AGR®) ratings of “Conservative” or “Average”
• Very low bankruptcy risk
• No shareholder class action or SEC litigation
• No material restatements or amended SEC filings
• No significant insider trading
• Low incentive compensation for the CEO and CFO in relation to annual compensation
