How to setup Outlook Express or Windows Mail for your TDS Gmail account

The following instructions will help you set up your TDS Email address in Outlook Express (Windows 2000 or XP) or Windows Mail (Windows Vista.) 

Note: Did you know the preferred method of checking e-mail is using TDS Gmail, this allows you safe and secure access to your Email online from any computer.

For Outlook Express: 

IMPORTANT: Before configuring your Email Program you must first Enable POP in Gmail for help with this please click here

To setup Outlook Express to retrieve your TDS Gmail while on a connected to the TDS network perform the following steps:

  1. Open Outlook or Outlook express
  2. Click on the word Tools located at the top of the Outlook window and then select Accounts
  3. On the Internet Accounts window, select Add  and then click Mail
  4. Enter your full name into the Dispaly Name field and click next
  5. Enter your full Gmail address (johndoes@tds.net) into the Email Address field and click next
  6. In the Email Servers window it should say My incoming mail server is a POP3 server.
  7. In the Incoming mail (POP3,IMAP or HTTP) server box enter pop.gmail.com
  8. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server box enter smtp.gmail.com and click next
  9. In the Internet Mail Logon window enter your full TDS Gmail address and password then click next
  10. Click finish
  11. On the Internet Accounts window select pop.gmail.com and click properties on the right.
  12. Click on the Advanced tab
  13. Check the box next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) under Outgoing Mail (SMTP)
    type in 465 in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) box
  14. Check then box This server requires an secure connection (SSL)
  15. In the Incoming mail (POP3) check the box next to This server requires an secure connection (SSL) the port will change to 995.
  16. Return to Servers tab and check the box Log on using Secure Password Authentication
  17. Click OK
  18. Close and re-enter Outlook. 

Outlook Express should now be configured for use with your TDS Internet Services Email address!

For Windows Vista: 

  1. Click on the Start Orb
  2. Click on All programs
  3. Locate Windows Mail and open it
  4. Click Tools, select Accounts, and click Add
  5. Select Email Account and click Next
  6. In the Display Name field, enter your name as you would like others to see it
  7. Click Next
  8. In the Email Address field, enter your TDS Gmail address
  9. Click Next
  10. Select POP3 for the incoming Email server type
  11. In the Incoming mail (POP3 OR IMAP) server field, type pop.gmail.com.
  12. In the Outgoing Email server (SMTP) name field, type smtp.gmail.com.
  13. Check Outgoing server requires authentication.
  14. Click Next
  15. In the E-mail Username field, enter your TDS Gmail address (e. g. johndoe@tds.net)
  16. In the Password field, enter your password
  17. Click Next
  18. Check Do not download my Email at this time
  19. Click Finish
  20. In the Internet Accounts window select pop.gmail.com and click properties on the right.
  21. Click on the Advanced tab
  22. Type in 465 in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) box  and check the box for This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) 
  23. check the box next to This server requires an secure connection (SSL) under the Incoming mail (POP3) the port will change to 995.
  24. Click OK 
  25. Completely close the Windows Mail program and then open it again.

Windows Mail should now be configured for use with your TDS Gmail!
