To enable/disable wireless on your Actiontec 704 or 724 DSL gateway, please click on the picture that matches your modem.

If you do not see your modem below and would like a wireless capable modem please call 1-888-CALL-TDS (1-888-225-5837)

Wireless capability is built right into the Actiontec 704 and 724 gateways. Each computer that you want to connect using the wireless feature must have its own wireless Network Interface Card (NIC) installed.

You may contact your Telecom office at 1-888-CALL-TDS to purchase a wireless NIC if you do not have one.

If you would like to purchase a wireless USB adapter, please click here.

Instructions for an Actiontec 724 DSL Gateway:

If you have an Actiontec 724 you will not need to enable the wireless features. The wireless should already be on and for security WPA will be already enabled.

The SSID and PSK (Pre-Shared Key) string required to access your secured connection are printed on a sticker on the bottom of your modem.

You may still need to configure each of your computers’ wireless NICs (network interface cards) by consulting your NIC manufacturer’s manual.

In some cases you may also need to modify the wireless settings on the modem itself. For example, some older wireless network devices do not support WPA security. If you need to change your settings, you can follow these steps:

  1. Connect your computer to the modem directly with an ethernet cable
  2. Open your Web Browser (example: Internet Explorer).
  3. Type http://192.168.0.1 in the address or location text box and press Enter.
  4. Select the wireless settings icon from the menu at the top
  5. Click on the advanced setup options to make any other your required changes.

To disable wireless for the 724 modem:

  1. Open your Web Browser (example: Internet Explorer).
  2. Type http://192.168.0.1 in the address or location text box and press Enter.
  3. Select the wireless settings icon from the menu at the top
  4. Set wireless of Off
  5. Click Save at the bottom of the page.

Instructions for an Actiontec 704 DSL Gateway:

If you have an Actiontec 704 the modem the wireless feature will need to be enabled and configured on the modem.

NOTE : these instructions are for the most recent Actiontec 704 firmware. If you cannot see "Wireless Setup" at step 4 or would to find out more about the firmware update; please visit www.tds.net/704firmware.

To enable Wireless on your Actiontec 704:

  1. Connect your computer directly to the modem using an ethernet cable.
  2. Open your Web Browser (example: Internet Explorer).
  3. Type http://192.168.0.1 in the address or location text box and press Enter.
  4. Click Setup/Configuration.
  5. Click Wireless Setup.
  6. Turn wireless on
  7. Change the ESSID to something denoting your household, such as your first or last name.
  8. Channel assigns the frequency band at which the Gateway communicates. You need to change this only if there are several wireless gateways near your home and you encounter problems accessing your gateway.
  9. For Security, TDS recommends WPA. However, WPA is not supported by all wireless network interface cards. Consult your wireless NIC manual to see if WPA is supported. If not, we recommend you upgrade your card for the best security. Alternately, you can use WEP security which is not as secure. Note: TDS is not responsible for the security of your wireless network.
  10. Click Next.
  11. Choose PSK String (Pre-Shared Key) and enter at least 20 alphanumeric (letters and/or numbers) characters. The minimum number you can enter is 8 and the maximum 63. Choosing a key at least 20 characters long will provide an adequate level of security. You will need to remember your Key to configure additional wireless devices on your network (such as Network Interface Cards). If the Keys of your devices do not match, they will not be able to communicate. Refer to your wireless NIC software to configure WPA.
  12. Click Next.
  13. Click Save and Restart. You must save and restart your Gateway for the changes to take effect.
  14. Once the modem has finished restarting, the Wireless light should be solid green. Your Actiontec modem has now been configured to broadcast a wireless signal. You will need to configure each of your computers’ wireless network interface cards by consulting your NIC manufacturer’s manual.
